Brian Carpenter ’06 Wins Intramural Championship

The former defender’s squad captured Villanova University’s indoor soccer title — but the real story involves the semifinal match the night before.

Brian’s route to the finals included a semifinal win over a team with two former Staples Wreckers:  Dave Sharpe ’07 and Liam Bohonnon ’08. That match ended in a 2-2 draw. Carp’s side emerged victorious, 4-3, on penalty kicks.

Fortunately, Dave and Liam have memories of a pair of penalty-kick wins at Staples, in the 2006 state “LL” quarterfinals and semis. Those memories should sustain them whenever they see Carp — and his trophy — on campus.

2 Wrecker Teams Reach 3-v-3 Semifinals

A pair of Staples squads reached the semifinals of yesterday’s 3-v-3 tournament at Green’s Farms Academy — and both lost on the tie-breaker (long-field “penalty kicks”).  The event raised approximately $1,500 for Darfur. It was organized extremely well by Andy Mondino, a GFA and Westport Soccer Association U-18 player, in conjunction with  Westport-based Save the Children.

Four varsity sophomores — Frankie Bergonzi, Sean Gallagher, Jake Krosse and Brendan Lesch — formed one of the semifinal squads (with 1 sub).  The other included sophomore Mikey Scott, Jim Wolf ’01, and Jim’s former Beachside teammate Joey Rus.

Two Staples threesomes also competed: seniors Jairo Alvarado, Jonathan Golembeski and Frankie Rende, and freshmen Aaron Liu, Jake Malowitz and Taylor McNair.  The frosh gave the varsity sophomores a hard-fought game.

Senior Adam Liu and former WSA player Kasper Klein-Ipsen volunteered their services as officials.  All who participated agreed:  It was a great, fun affair, for an excellent cause.

Dan Woog ’71, Dennis Murphy ’73, Ken Murphy ’76 To Be Honored By Sportsmen

The head coach of Staples’ boys varsity program, and half of the famed Murphy foursome, will be feted at the Sportsmen of Westport’s 48th annual Dinner of Champions. The event is set for Tuesday, May 19 (6 p.m.) at the Continental Manor in Norwalk.

Dan WoogIn 6 years as Wreckers’ head coach, Dan Woog’s teams have won 2 FCIAC championships. They have reached the state “LL” championship game once, and made 3 state semi-final appearances.

After graduating from Staples (where he played on the 1970 state championship team) and Brown University, Dan returned to Westport to begin a coaching and writing career.  He helped found the Westport Soccer Association in 1975, and formed the WSA’s 1st U-16 and U-14 teams. His U-19, U-16 and U-14 teams won 10 Connecticut Junior Soccer Association state titles, and reached the finals of the USYSA Region I tournament once.

In 1991 Dan was named National Youth Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He was also honored as Connecticut Junior Soccer Association Coach of the Year in 1980,  and in 2000 was inducted into the Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame.

Dennis MurphyAs a senior at Staples, Dennis Murphy scored the only goal in the the Wreckers’ 1-0 state championship win over Conard-West Hartford — 30 seconds into the match. It was Staples’ 4th consecutive state title; the team finished with an 18-0-1 mark. Dennis also played a key role on Staples’ previous state title, as a junior.

After a stellar career at Southern Connecticut State University, where he served as a 2-time captain and reached the NCAA Division II Final Four, Dennis masterminded Westport’s legendary Bridge Grille U-23 team. He also coached Westport youth teams (his WSA U-18 team was a regional finalist), and served as Staples head coach Jeff Lea’s assistant for the state champion 1982 team. Dennis now lives in Pennsylvania, where he is a sales associate with Nike. Last spring he coached FC Delco to the U-15 state championship.

Ken MurphyKen Murphy was the only sophomore starter on Staples’ 1973 team — when they won their record 5th consecutive state championship. He assisted on the only goal that year in the finals against Manchester, a sudden-death overtime strike that preserved the squad’s 43-game unbeaten streak. As a senior — when he served as Staples’ lone captain — Ken scored in the 2-0 FCIAC championship win over Stamford. He was a 2-time All-State selection. His U-19 McGuire Cup team reached the 1975 regional finals. As a Bridge Grille U-23 player, Ken won 5 state titles.

Ken also enjoyed a superb career at the University of Connecticut. He captained the Huskies, taking them to 3 NCAA tournament appearances and 2 regional finals while twice earning All-New England honors.  Ken then played professionally in the North American Soccer League, for the Detroit Express and Washington Diplomats, alongside international legend Johan Cruyff.

Following a very successful career as a commodities trader, Ken — who earned an MBA at Sacred Heart University — joined the men’s soccer coaching staff at Brown University. He also led Bruno United FC to 3 Rhode Island state championships.

Besides Woog and the Murphys, the Sportsmen this year will honor former athletes George Chappa (Staples Class of 1957), Jeff Lavaty (SHS ’57), Jim Deegan (SHS ’72) and Courtney Sutherland-Petti (’87). Rick Giunta (’79) will receive the PAL Award, while Al DiGuido — founder of Al’s Angels — will receive the William A. Krause Jr. Humanitarian Award. Five Staples students will also be given Sportsmen scholarships at the event.

Tickets for the sit-down, prime rib dinner with open bar, are $45. Checks payable to “Sportsmen of Westport” can be sent to: Karen DeFelice, 82 Cardinal St., Fairfield, CT 06825. Players, Alumni Looking For Jobs

Staples soccer players are nothing if not resourceful. Several have already asked if StaplesSoccer.com can spread the word: They need work.

Current players are looking for summer jobs — outdoors or inside; sports-related, retail, restaurants, service, whatever. They’re hard workers, and will not let employers down!

Current college students are searching for summer work as well. Some will be in Westport; others are scattered around the country. They too are eager to give a solid day’s work for a day’s pay.

And of course the college class of ’09 is about to graduate. Their job market-entering timing may not be perfect, but as former Staples players they’ve got a lot to offer.

If you’re an employer — or know someone who is hiring — please email dwoog@optonline.net.  Westport, Fairfield County, anywhere else — it doesn’t matter. Let us know your needs. We’ll do our best to match opportunities with the right players.

Consider it Staples soccer’s own stimulus package.

3-v-3 Tourney To Aid Darfur This Sunday At GFA

Two Greens Farms Academy students are using soccer to help Darfur.

Andy Mondino — who plays on the Westport Soccer Association U-18 team, and is a Grade 8 referee — and Joseph Filgueiras have organized a 3-v-3 tournament.  It’s set for 12 to 3 p.m. next Sunday, April 19, at GFA.  All Westport middle and high school players — and adults — are invited.

The cost for a team of 3 is $30; a team of 4 (1 sub) is $35.  All proceeds go to Save the Children, to help Darfur refugees.

The tournament includes prizes, a silent auction, Darfur T-shirt sales, and a bake sale.

For questions, or to register, contact Andy: mondinoa@gfacademy.org; 203-216-0205.

Dana Hollingsworth ’73′s Daughter Aims For Olympics

Dana earned fame as a state champion and St. Lawrence University soccer player, and Staples wrestler. His sons, Jeb and Kyle, were lacrosse stars at Darien High, then went on to play at the University of Denver and Brown respectively.

But Ellery, 17, might outshine them all. She has a legitimate chance to compete in the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver — in snowboarding.

According to a long profile by Tom Renner in the Stamford Advocate, Ellery trained for snowboarding by skateboarding. She spent 40 hours a week on it, many on a quarter pipe that her brothers helped build.

Ellery went on to become Rookie of the Year in the U.S. Open of Snowboarding Championships in 2006. She was the only female to earn berths in the quarterpipe, superpipe and slopestyle events.

Her career has taken off since then. This winter she finished 4th in the Winter X Games 13 in the superpipe, 4th in the FIS World Cup Halfpipe in La Molina, Spain, and 3rd at the U.S. Open.

In the past year alone she has competed or trained in Vermont, Colorado, California, Spain, Japan and New Zealand. She has a sports marketing agency (Mosaic Management), and according to Renner, Ellery is “the future” of the sport.

In 7th grade she began attending Stratton Mountain School. It has been an excellent fit, and she plays on the soccer team there.

Over-30s Return From Arsenal

Westport FC’s Over-30 team just returned from the trip of a lifetime.  Invited to London by Ivan Gazidis — former Westport FC player, former colleague of Mark Noonan ’83 at MLS, and current CEO/GM of Arsenal — the group spend a long, amazing weekend in England.  Here is Dan Donovan’ ’82′s report:

When Ivan heard that Brian Sullivan ’82 was diagnosed with cancer, he told Sully to get through it — and he’d have the whole team over.

Sully fulfilled his part of the deal, and Ivan came through as promised.

Our team made its way overseas, and on Friday, April 3 we gathered for lunch and a beer or two at a proper pub, the Grapes.  Mike Brown ’83 quickly rechristened it the Sea Grape, after the Over-30′s old haunt in Fairfield.

Following a visit to Buckingham Palace and a double-decker tour of London, there was more general debauchery and a lot of laughs through the night, the sort you’d expect when old friends get together.

Before Saturday’s early-morning kick-around, Ivan arrived at our hotel.  He presented Sully with an Arsenal jersey signed by the entire team — the only time he has made such a request of the side.  For once, Sully was speechless.

A morning run was followed by short goal in Hyde Park, including Ivan.  Unfortunately, he did not offer anyone a contract.

Saturday afternoon was spent at The Emirates, Arsenal’s stunning new stadium.  Ivan took Westport FC into the locker room, then out through the players’ tunnel onto the field.  Though even Ivan could not allow anyone to step on the pitch, it was an awe-inspiring moment.  Calling it a carpet would be offensive.

After many photos we repaired to the gift shop, to outfit all our kids, show Ivan our gratitude, and revive the British economy.  Arsenal won its match 2-0 over Manchester City, while Westport FC soaked up the special atmosphere of a Premiership match.

Brian Sullivan and his boys cheer on Arsenal

Brian Sullivan and his boys cheer on Arsenal

Dinner that night was at a great Chinese restaurant recommended by team manager Matt Porio.  A few Oxford Old Boys alumni team members – our foe the following day — joined us.  Forsaking football for a bit, a number of FC players headed out to a sports bar to watch the NCAA Final Four.  The bar was packed with American students, reminding us that we are old enough to be their parents.

Sunday morning’s match was at a big, flat field at the Honourable Artillery Company, a military facility in the Financial District.  While not quite The Emirates, it was certainly more than adequate for Westport’s aging squad.

The Oxford Old Boys were coming off a 9-1 victory against the current Oxford squad, and they were big.  But we realized early that we could run with them, and worked the ball around well while maintaining possession nicely.  We had several very good chances.

Oxford took a 1-0 lead toward the end of the first half, on a penalty kick.  But Westport equalized when Mark Noonan ’83 tooled two defenders, and was taken down for a PK.

There was more good play in the second half.  It seemed we would break through when, against the run of play, Ivan (who, reminiscent of Pele’s last game, played the first half for Westport and the second for his alumni Oxford squad) tucked in a cheapy.

FC continued to apply relentless pressure, but could not crack the net.  The final score remained 2-1.  After a quick beer with the Oxford guys, we headed to the airport and home.

It was a great weekend.  These don’t come often, and lots of sacrifices were made to make it happen.   But it was fantastic.

And the entire experience was anchored in one thing: Westport soccer.  To think that Sully, Noons, Brownie, Guy Claveloux ’83, Todd Coleman ’84, Jono Sollinger ’86, Nathan Bird ’89, Alex Deegan ’91 and I — joined by a bunch of great guys connected by Westport soccer like Edwin Leon via Rich Horosky ’84, Edwin Chapman via Todd, Steve Halloran via Brownie — would get together to plan this trip through our soccer family more than 20 years after we all graduated, went off to college, built careers and had families, is truly stunning.  It’s a testament to what Westport and Staples soccer is all about.

PS:  On the plane ride home, Dr. Jono Sollinger asked everyone to name the highlights of the trip.  Each of us mentioned the opportunity to be with the boys again.  And each of us is pissed we didn’t win, despite schooling Oxford.  After all these years, the competitiveness that resulted in numerous FCIAC and state championships, college play, and even the pros (Deegan) — everyone still has that incredible desire to win.

Check Out Our New ‘News’ Look

Staples soccer has always been a community — and now we’re making StaplesSoccer.com more of one too.

The “News” page has long been one of our most popular features — but it was a one-way street.  You couldn’t congratulate Eric Meyer for saving some woman’s life, or the new captains on their election.  You couldn’t comment on the upcoming STA camp, or Kyle Martino’s match on ESPN2.  It was like watching a great game, but being unable to cheer.

Now you can cheer (or jeer) all you want.  Each news item will have a comment option.  We hope for a great Wrecker dialogue on these news pages.  Say whatever you wish (though red cards will be awarded for foul or abusive language).

We’ll roll out some other changes soon too.  For example, we’re adding comment capability to our game results in the fall, so conversations on The Hill can continue in cyberspace.  We’ve already got RSS feed capability (see below); we plan to add more subscription options in the future.  If you’ve got suggestions for more interactivity, we’d love to hear them.

As we head into our second 50 years of Staples soccer, we hope our program — and our website — is as young and fresh as ever.  Go Wreckers!
