Mikey Scott Earns 4th FCIAC Crown

Mikey Scott — the hard-hitting, tough-running, slick-fielding 2nd baseman for the Staples baseball team — added a 4th FCIAC championship to his Wrecker resume yesterday.

Mikey Scott

The 4th-seeded baseball team won the FCIAC championship — its 3rd in 4 years — by toppling #1 Danbury 5-3 at Bridgeport’s Harbor Yard.

This is Scott’s 1st league title.  He earned 3 FCIAC championships in soccer.  He’s also got 2 state crowns — 1 each in soccer and skiing.

In other FCIAC action, Staples track finished 2nd, behind longtime champion Danbury.  Sean Gallagher and former soccer player George Birch comprised half of the 4×800 relay team, which won the FCIAC title with a time of 8:05.08.

Gallagher also teamed up with Max Hoberman, as the 4×400 relay squad placed 2nd (3:26.11).

Hoberman was 4th in the triple jump (41-2.).

The volleyball team, which includes soccer players Steven Denowitz and AJ Green, fell to Darien, 3-2 in the FCIAC finals.  The Wreckers were shooting for their 9th straight league championship.

State tournament play starts this week for the baseball and volleyball teams.

Brine Ball Earns A Prize

Recently, Brine ran a contest on Facebook.  They wanted photos of Brine balls in soccer trophy cases.

Staples coach Dan Woog had one — in his home trophy case.  He snapped a shot of the ball –

– and sent along this caption:

This was signed by members of the first Westport (CT) Soccer Association U-14 team, in 1975, which I coached.  Dan Donovan, whose name is visible, went on to become captain of the 1981 state champions at Staples High School, then captained Lehigh University.  He now coaches his own sons in the WSA.

Staples is still a high school power, and the WSA remains one of the strongest town clubs in the Northeast.

The photo did the trick.  Today the Staples boys soccer team received 10 championship Brine balls, plus a ball bag.

The Wreckers have not used Brine balls in years.  But in soccer — as in life — whatever goes around, comes around.

Matt Sych ’07 Scores MLS Internship

Matt Sych ’07 has just finished his 1st week at work.  He’s the  new digital properties intern for MLS/Soccer United Marketing.

Matt Sych

Matt’s department manages all sponsorships and commerical content within the SUM network of properties:  MLSSoccer.com, Goal.com, Bigsoccer.com and many more.

Matt — who spent the last 4 years as the University of Connecticut men’s soccer videographer — reports:  “I’m having a great time and learning a lot about the sport marketing/advertising industry.  It’s really cool to see the rapid growth of soccer in the United States, and how MLS has positioned itself as a top contender for sport sponsorship deals.  We’ve got meetings with some major video, food services and other companies this week.”

Wakeman Speed Camp Returns For 7th Year

Kurt Dasbach’s Wakeman Speed Camp — which has trained dozens of Staples soccer players in speed, strength and flexibility — returns for its 7th year this summer.

Sessions are set for Mondays and Thursdays, 5 to 6:30 p.m., from June 27through August 8.  As always, campers can sign up for and enroll for the entire summer, or only those sessions when they’ll be in Westport.

Kurt’s training methods improve speed in just a few short weeks. Over the past 5 years, the average camper improved his 40-yard dash time by 16%. The median improvement is 19%.

Kurt has earned a level 3 certificate from the International Institute of Advanced Speed Training in Lausanne, Switzerland.  For many years he has helped improve the speed of professional, Olympic, college, and high school athletes.  Having played professional soccer in Europe and South America, Kurt is especially adept at developing speed for soccer purposes.

In a recent national survey of high school and college coaches, speed — not technical skill or tactical knowledge – was cited as the most desirable quality among prospective players.

For more information, including registration procedures, click on www.wakemanspeed.com.

Whether you're a soccer and track ace like Walker Marsh or not, Kurt Dasbach's speed camp will help your technique and times.

Ken Murphy ’76 Named To Fairfield County Hall Of Fame

Hard-nosed midfielder Ken Murphy ’76 — currently the men’s varsity coach at Connecticut College — will be inducted into the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame‘s University of Connecticut wing.

Ken Murphy

The former Wrecker captain and 2-time All-State selection led the University of Connecticut to 3 NCAA tournament appearances.  Captain of the 1979 Husky squad, he was a 3-time All-Yankee Conference and 2-time All-New England pick.

He played 2 years with the North American Soccer League’s Detroit Express before a knee injury ended his career.

This year’s 4 inductees — including Staples graduate Sean Mulcahy, who played football at UConn — bring to 17 the number of athletes enshrined in the county’s Hall of Fame’s University of Connecticut wing.  Previous Staples soccer inductees include Tim Hunter ’71 and Paul Hunter ’73.

The hall is housed at UConn’s Stamford campus.

The induction ceremony is set for Thursday, June 2 (5:30 p.m.), at UConn-Stamford.  For more information, click here or email tomc@fairfieldcountysports.com.

Ryan Armour Named Boys Soccer Scholar-Athlete

Ryan Armour is Staples boys soccer’s 2010-11 scholar-athlete.

Ryan Armour

The award — given to the senior with the highest GPA on the varsity team — will be presented at the annual Scholar-Athlete dinner on Sunday, June 5 (5 p.m.) at Continental Manor in Norwalk.

Ryan will join 34 other scholar-athletes — 1 from each boys and girls varsity squad — in a unique ceremony.  Each representative is asked one question — about his or her athletic career, academic interests, extracurricular activities or interests — and responds briefly.  The resulting answers provide a mosaic of the many talents and passions that drive Staples student-athletes.

Ticket information is available from the Staples athletic office:  sskutnik@westport.k12.ct.us.

Sophomore Soccer Players Are SLOBs

Three Staples soccer players — Dylan Hoy, Patrick Connolly and Zach Morrison — spent Saturday landscaping, repairing and painting a fence at the Saugatuck apartments operated by Homes With Hope.

The sophomores are part of the Service League of Boys — known as SLOBs.  The club organizes community service efforts for Staples students and their fathers.
