Staples, Central Square Off In Alumni Match

Fourteen former Staples soccer players — spanning graduating classes from 1991 to 2012 — met their former rivals from Central High School tonight, at Bridgeport’s Kennedy Stadium. The match raised funds for Central’s soccer program.

Though some of the Wreckers had never met their teammates, all played the same Staples soccer style. Their average age was older than their Hilltopper counterparts, but it was a close, competitive — and very fun — event.

Derek Kennedy ’05 scored twice for the Westporters. At the other end of the field, Dave Sharpe ’07 — the team organizer — made a spectacular kick save in goal.

The oldest player (Nate Bird ’91) graduated 3 years before the youngest (Max Hoberman ’12 and Will Meinke ’12) were even born.

Other players included Mike Dobbs ’97, Juan Esteva ’97, Jason Alvarez ’03, Chris Meinke ’05, Greg Bachman ’07, Matt Geringer ’05, Nicky Hoberman ’07, Craig Wolgast ’07  and Alex McDowell ’08.

Central varsity coach Jay Silverman and Staples varsity coach Dan Woog hope to make this an annual affair.
